How to play the dubbing game

The idea fits in one sentence: a movie scene plays without voices, and you dub the characters. Here is how a game goes, step by step.

1. Create the game

The host creates a game and invites friends with a link, a 5-letter code or a QR code. Voice chat is open from the lobby.

The host picks the mode (realistic, fun or free), the recording (together or blind), the format (every one for themselves or teams), the number of scenes and the scene packs.

2. Casting

The game draws a scene with, if possible, one character per player. If there are more players than characters, the others are in the audience: they watch and vote. Next scene, it is their turn.

Everyone sees their character and lines, with their length. When everyone is ready, the game moves on.

3. The screening

In “together” mode, the scene first plays with its real sound, to get the tone and rhythm. You can skip it when everyone is ready.

4. Action: dub it!

Three beeps, then the scene plays again without voices, with its music and sound effects. Your lines scroll on the rhythm band: speak when they touch the red bar. Your microphone is recorded during the scene (REC light).

In “blind” mode, the picture is hidden and you only see your own lines: nobody hears anyone. The surprise is saved for the replay.

5. The replay

The takes are sent to the server, then everybody watches the scene with your voices. It is the best moment of the game. In teams, the second team then dubs the same scene.

6. Votes and points

Everyone votes for their favourite dubber (not themselves, nor their team). Each vote is worth 100 points, and the game adds a sync score from 0 to 100: did you speak at the right time, not too early, not too late?

  • Vote received: +100 points
  • Sync: up to +100 points per scene
  • End of the game: the podium, and your replays to share

Frequently asked questions

How is the sync score computed?
The server detects when you speak in your take and compares it with when your character speaks: speaking during their lines, starting right on the bar and not talking over the others scores the most.
What if a player disconnects?
The game goes on. If an actor left, the game does not wait for their take: the replay uses the voices received.
Can I play alone?
Yes: you then dub every character of the scene, to practise or to make a video.
How long does a game last?
About 3 to 4 minutes per scene (casting, dubbing, replay, vote). A 3-scene game lasts about a quarter of an hour.

The easiest way to understand is to try: a game starts in 10 seconds.
